Art • Music • Shenanigans

Heard meowing outside my window. This little guy came right up to me for attention (and food). He sat outside my door and kept meowing so I cut up some little weenies for him. This apartment doesn’t allow pets, but if any of my followers are in the Arlington (TX) area and want a sweet little affectionate tabby boy, send me a note/ask. More than likely he’ll stick around for a few more days.

For two days, we surveyed the fan presence for the narrative podcast Welcome to Night Vale here on tumblr. Commonplace Books’ horror/mystery series follows the broadcasts of Cecil Palmer, a radio host in the town of Night Vale. Cecil’s dynamic with his boyfriend Carlos is a frequent feature on the show and has been a point of contention with homophobic bloggers on the site before, but now it seems WTNV’s diverse cast and progressive stance has attracted a new kind of scumbag attitude.

So, is the WTNV fandom community racist?
We asked the tags if they thought the community that formed around Night Vale had turned unwelcoming towards people of color and interpretations of figures on the show as characters of color — and, specifically, if they’d seen accepted white supremacist and overtly racist attitudes in what should be safe fan spaces. For a show as progressive and accepting as Night Vale is, the results were upsetting.

What more proof do you need?

Racism isn’t the only issue that stirring the pot in a negative way but it certainly is one of the most prominent.
I’m not the only one of any fandom to say: “Stop with this bull shit.”
I’m a pretty recent fan of the WTNV podcast and what I drew me to this show was the ambiguity of the characters living in a not-so-ambiguous desert town. It’s a brilliant idea and it’s a successful show.
The writers purposely made these characters ambiguous that allows the listeners to interpret for themselves. That’s the main point!
I don’t understand why fans have this great URGE to POLICE each others’ work. But it needs to STOP.
Long before joining WTNV, the Motorcity fandom was my first place I experienced the “FANDOM POLICE” I never knew this existed nor did I see a reason why it needs to exist. Just because a handful of “popular” tumblr users self-proclaimed it was their duty to regulate the affairs that went on in the fandom.
Fuck that and fuck them too.
No one is nor will anyone ever be permitted to censor someone else’s interpretation. If you don’t like it, then just don’t look at it. Don’t read it. Roll your eyes and walk away. Blacklist that tag and move on with your life.
Cause I’m really sick of this shit.

I’ve seen a lot of fandoms fall, but it’s only in the WTNV circles that I’ve seen it escalate to this level, with MLP being a close second. I’ve witnessed active harassment, death threats, etc. because people defended their depictions of characters as something other than white (this happened with humanized ponies as well). And the thing I see happen every time is this: when someone expresses their frustration over the fact that mere depiction of a character as not white is a grounds for harassment (and that they don’t feel safe as a result), the conversation gets derailed to ‘all headcanons are equal’, which really has nothing to do with the original problem.
The issue on the surface may look like the work of fandom police, but it goes so much deeper than that. Deeper than even the subject itself. It’s no longer about the fandom, but the inherent racism that’s allowed to prevail unobstructed simply because it’s the internet. WTNV just seems to be the most recent example.

So my sister’s baby is due literally any day and I come down with a cold. Guess this Aunt Pam will have to keep her distance this weekend.

My mom’s turtle. She seems to love Dr. Pepper as much as I do (or at least the can).

Why? because this is the adorable little lady that has been keeping me company these past couple of weeks.

So I’ve been thinking about other commission ideas, and I had an idea. I’ve noticed with a lot of artists, if they love to lineart, they abhor coloring. When tehvangeist's birthday request was to color his lines, I did this in a little over an hour and a half:

If I started offering colorist services at my usual $10 an hour commission rate (meaning the above image would have been only $15 to color), would anyone be interested?

Vio’s Summer Convention Commission Drive!

I’ve decided regardless of how broke I am, conventions are a chance to sell my art and I can’t afford to miss two opportunities to make money (at local cons, no less) just because I didn’t have the initial investment.

So here’s the deal. There are two conventions I wish to attend, AnimeFEST in Dallas and Anime North Texas in Fort Worth. So let’s break this down:

  • For AnimeFEST, it will cost $90 for me to get a table and badge plus $35 for an extra badge for my husband, J.M. Toledo (to help me run the table as well as sell his books). This is a four-day convention, so the $125 is well worth it.
  • For Anime North Texas, I will be splitting a table with chibiremix. Chibi will be expecting her firstborn about a month before ANT, so she will not be able to attend. The table is $90 and comes with one badge, but obviously if there are two artists splitting a table, we need two badges. That is an extra $30. Once split down the middle, that will run $60 apiece. The good news is, we already each put down $10 to reserve the table back in November, so we each only owe $50. I have since refunded the $10 Chibi put down, but the new artist I will be splitting a table with, pieromancerdraws, has agreed to cover the $50 plus the refunded $10 reservation fee. That still leaves $50 for me to cover. The balance hasn’t changed, just the sharing artist.

The problem is that both conventions want their money by June, so I only have two months to get this together. I refuse to dip into my rent/medical bill funds, so I am opening a commission drive! Above I have various examples and prices, but more options - as well as my commission guidelines, paypal and contact email - can be found on my COMMISSION PAGE so feel free to look there.

So far, I have $25 towards the total of $175. I’ll update the status bar at the top as commissions come in. Also, I have a special incentive for the commissioner that pushes the grand total past the $175 goal: a free bonus 11”x17” full digital painting of whatever you want me to draw, as long as it’s Safe For Work. This includes fanart, which you can only ever get from me during charities and giveaways, as I WILL NOT take commissions of copyrighted characters.

Thank you for your time! Every bit helps (and as always, so do reblogs)!

HELLO, THIS WAS MY WEEKEND.

I’ve been wanting to design each assassin’s mask for a while now, inspired by a mix of the wearable sculptures of Rein Vollenga and planetary symbols.
The symbols were actually the hardest part of the whole process and took me several months to solidify SOB. When I finally figured all of them out, I kinda went crazy with these bust shots.

In order:

Sun - Kajur, Mercury - Kye, Venus - Hiu, Moon - Chandra, Mars - Kou, Jupiter - Marduk, Saturn - Shani, Uranus - Yozu, Neptune - Sei’zin, Pluto - Yama.

Kajur doesn’t have a mask since she’s the head of the Solaris organization and doesn’t do assassinations. The rest are all in order of her favoritism.

More of this project can be found here
And you can also check this out on dA!
